From Helping Friends to Helping a Community: The Start of 850 Tech Gurus
It all began with a few phone calls from friends.
“Hey Derek, my Wi-Fi’s down—can you take a look?”
“Derek, my computer’s acting weird again, any ideas?”
I didn’t think much of it at first. Helping people with their tech has always been something I enjoy—it’s part puzzle-solving, part problem-preventing, and part making life a little less stressful for someone else. But over time, those one-off favors started to grow into something bigger.
That’s when 850 Tech Gurus was born.
Why Start a Tech Service?
Living in the 850 area, I noticed a gap. Big companies could sell you expensive gear, but when it came to honest, reliable tech help—especially for families, small businesses, and churches—there weren’t many approachable options. People needed someone they could trust, someone local, and someone who wouldn’t speak in confusing “tech jargon.”
The Mission
From the beginning, the goal of 850 Tech Gurus has been simple:
- Make tech less stressful.
- Make solutions affordable.
- Make people feel confident, not confused.
Whether it’s setting up a home Wi-Fi network, troubleshooting a streaming system, or helping a church run smoothly on Sunday morning, the heart of the business is the same—serving people.
First Projects
Some of our earliest projects came from local churches, like Grace Covenant Church, where we built a full streaming solution on a Raspberry Pi. Others came from neighbors who just needed their smart TVs or laptops set up the right way.
Each project was a reminder: technology isn’t just about wires and code. It’s about people being able to connect, share, and do the things that matter most to them.
Looking Ahead
850 Tech Gurus may have started with me answering a few calls for help, but today it’s becoming something bigger. It’s about building trust in the community, finding creative solutions, and showing that technology doesn’t have to be intimidating.
And who knows? Maybe one day the “gurus” part will be plural for real.
